In one chapter of the book of the German romantic poet and prose writer Heinrich Heine 's Memoirs of Mr. Schnabelewopsky somehow appears in_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b5cf58d_the figure of the "Holand Blue Plan". The fate of the sailor, who sinned by wanting to overcome nature at all costs a to sail through a dangerous storm, is cursed for his blasphemy a his only hope of liberating death is the faithful love of a woman , immediately caught Richard Wagner's attention. What more should a romantic composer wish for than to express with music the stormy sea, the raging human souls, the passions of love i the determination to die for love? In the main female character, Senta, Wagner projected his idea of a female ideal who sacrifices herself for the salvation of the male hero. Takovou rolí je v jeho tvorbě i Alžběta v  Tannhäuserovi , Isolda v  Tristanovi a_cc781905-5cde-3194- bb3b-136bad5cf58d_Isolde and Brünnhilda v  The Ring of the Nibelung .

The Wandering Dutchman continues the tradition of German romantic operas by Carl Maria von Weber and Heinrich Marschner. Je to v zásadě ještě tradiční opera uzavřených čísel s recitativy a áriemi, zároveň zde ale Wagner již nastoupil cestu k pozdějším prokomponovaným hudebním dramatům s_cc781905-5cde -3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_leitmotifs, associated with specific characters and themes.

The basic ones are already included in the prelude: the Dutchman's motif, the storm motif and the redemption motif. A dream also plays an important role in the opera: Senta lives in a different world from her surroundings, she longs for a figment of her own imagination, for a Dutchman whose ghost is a reality for her. Thus, Wagner offered the directors a wide space to express the often very narrow boundaries between reality and a dream or between reason and madness.

The premiere took place on January 2, 1843 in Dresden under Wagner's baton. V The Lost Dutchman was performed in Bohemia for the first time on 7/9/1856 by the ensemble of the German opera of the Estates Theater in Prague conducted by František Škroupa. So far, the last Prague production premiered at the Prague State Opera on 5/29/2008 v staged by conductor Guillaume Tourniaire a v_cc781905-5cde-3193-136bad5cf58d_directed by Stephen Taylor. The new production was undertaken by the music director of the State Opera, German conductor Karl-Heinz Steffens , a Norwegian director a set designer Ole Anders Tandberg .
